JUne 18 - reading logs are due for a 4th quarter grade (this grade is valued as a test)
June 1st - due date for research "paper" May update on research - by tomorrow, may 15, students will have completed the drafting of the three chapters and an introduction ! this week we will continue to work on graphic resources (text features) for each "chapter"... and add finishing touches to our "chapters"
April 23 - 27 - students will continue research reading this week and begin informational writing...this is not a research paper ! the end product will be a 3 "chapter" informational writing piece with a graphic feature for each chapter (and, it will be due June 1st) april 19 - students selected topics and were introduced to authentic research (how to find real & valid resources) ; tomorrow we will begin reading & evaluating resources - taking notes
april 16 - research topics were discussed in class today ; students need to consider what theirs will be ; questions to consider for the topics will be discussed tomorrow
April 3 - 6 - state test prep (reading comprehension practice & reading/writing practice) ; continue novel in class - chapter 12 March 19 -23 - continue novel
March 12 - 16 - Novel - "Lightning thief" - we are reading this in class & taking notes about mythological creatures, characteristics of gods and defining vocabulary
March 5 - 9 - Monday and Tuesday students took a nonfiction reading quiz & test (skills for answering comprehension Questions & vocabulary were included)...In addition to written responses (Long & short). *compare/contrast essays, from last week, should be in final copy form by friday.*
February 26 - March 2 - quiz greek word roots on wednesday, february 28 ; nonfiction reading test on friday, march 2 (skills test - nothing to study); throughout the week - compare/contrast essay for athens & sparta
February 20 -23 - Guest presenters for reading workshop (Ms. lafuro) & chinese new year (the wixtrom brothers) ; Greek word roots (in coordination with legacies of ancient greece)
february 12 - 15 - nonfiction mini-research topics included the winter olympics 2018 & chinese new year ; we searched the internet & used newsela to read information....then, students selected the central idea, with supporting details for each topic
February 5-9 - more work with nonfiction "trade" books ... pick 5 words that are new & important to your topic and investigate it (definitions, synonyms, how does the word fit with the text?)...answered questions about : 1) what is fascinating ; 2)list 5 text features (or 5 different examples of 1 feature) ; 3) name and discuss the main central idea
January 31 - argumentative essays were due today (Wednesday) in final copy ; nonfiction unit in process - we examined & made notes about the organization of our "trade" books and included a look at text features ; Friday we will be piecing together supporting details to discover the central idea
January 25 - rough copy of the essay should be complete for tomorrow (students were given step-by-step instructions and a checklist to confirm that everything is included) ; final copies will be completed, after an editing workshop tomorrow - nonfiction books were selected and we will begin a nonfiction unit next week
January 19/20 - finding evidence & begin drafting Argumentative...Intro completed (draft)
january 10/11/12 - reading of "debate" articles for argumentative essay....discuss picking a side & identifying the counterclaim
january 9 - final copy of letter completed ; begin nonfiction reading for argumentative essay
january 8 - most students are working on final copy (to be completed in school, with envelope)....some did not have rough copy ready and do not know their mailing address!
January 5 - students who did not finish the rough copy of the letter must do so over the weekend
January 2 - 5 - New Year goals letter - students listed goals (3) today in class, with objectives (ways of accomplishing those goals) & what they hope for 2018 Note : the letter will be written in a friendly letter format & an official envelope completed by friday
december 18/19 - completed "suitcase" presentations for novel - prepared for powerpoint/poster presentations (tomorrow)
december 11 - figurative language examples (7) from bud, not buddy (on looseleaf)
December 7 - bud, not buddy continues through chapter 14 (tomorrow we will look at bud's rules) and continue reading...
December 4 - Due dates for presentations : * "suitcase" show-n-tell - thurs.,12/14 (items to share in a container) *Winter event/holiday tradition - wed.,12/20 (powerpoint/or, poster) november 30 - tomorrow students will select a mini-research topic for either a winter event (for example - iditarod, winter olympics,etc...), or a winter holiday tradition (could be international) note for absentees : in "bud, not buddy," we are in the middle of chapter 11
november 28 - "bud, not buddy" quiz - chapters 1 -7 *open book* tomorrow, wednesday
November 27 - before thanksgiving, students were asked to find a rock (representing anything they did over the weekend)....this was reassigned today & the rock could be for any activity/place visited during the month of november....this will be a part of a future presentation that goes with our novel...
november 8 - during class today, we edited the literary essay (Schooled character) and began writing final copies...if students were absent, they should be prepared to complete their final copy in class tomorrow
november 1 - 3 - body paragraphs & conclusion written for literary essay ; if not completed, this should be drafted over the weekend... * "Wonder" flyer sent home - optional
october 30 - in class, we began drafting a literary essay about characters...students need to have (at least) the first paragraph drafted ; on thursday, we will take a quiz for "schooled"... chapters 11 -31
october 26 - using "schooled," list character traits & find text evidence... for the beginning, middle, end of the story
october 24 - using student independent novels, search/identify more character traits (read about 1 or 2 chapters)
october 23 - using new novels, identify character traits for a main character and write those traits on the sticky note provided
october 19 - quiz tomorrow for "schooled" vocabulary (10 words )
october 17 - "schooled" vocabulary quiz on friday (10 words - 5 you select, 5 miss breedveld selects) also, get notes about character development (naomi)
october 12 - complete bus with rainism :)
October 10 - Narrative #2 was due
October 4 - "schooled" quiz , chapters 1 - 10 on friday (students may create "cheat" sheets)
October 2 - editing for run-on sentences was completed friday ; today students used a checklist to rate their own paper ; "schooled" novel - continued into chapter 10 today - for homework , students need to find text evidence for one character trait (for cap, naomi, sophie)
september 27 - students have examined & revised their narrative to include a good beginning, middle & end ; "schooled" novel - continuing with chapter 7 tomorrow
september 26 - students are working on an extended narrative piece * rough copy due tomorrow!!!
September 14 - students are working on a short narrative about an important event ; this will be on a "newspaper" poster...pictures are needed for this piece & a writing about a hero
September 8 - students need a novel with them at all times (beginning monday)...this is an assignment :)
September 11 - students will receive homework credit for having a book (novel) with them tomorrow ; Also, writing Classwork needs to be completed (important event rough copy)
